Faeborn - Threshold Warden

Chuck's Faeborn lineage comes from his maternal grandmother, who came to the Illinois/Indiana region from the Ozark hill country and maintained the family's awareness of the hidden world as household practice. He grew up knowing what thin places were and what the etiquette around them required. The Threshold Society found him at twenty-one and described what he already did as a profession. He's been a Warden for twelve years.

His assigned region covers central Illinois with Shelford at the northeast corner. The Harlow crossing has been on his assessment schedule since he took the region. His most recent assessment, a month before the Threat Designation, produced "stable, monitoring recommended." He now suspects the crossing has been trending stressed for longer than his monthly schedule was catching.

His Cousin Marcus

Marcus is Chuck's younger cousin by four years. They grew up in the same extended family in rural Indiana and have maintained the relationship adult cousins keep when the family history won't let them fully separate. Marcus developed his Faeborn lineage markers in his mid-twenties — the lineage expresses late in their family — and called Chuck when he didn't know what to do about it. Chuck helped him understand what he was and introduced him to the Society. Marcus is now a Mediator-in-training at the Shelford Waystation under Rhennick's supervision.

When Corella received the Threat Designation, Marcus called Chuck first. Chuck drove to Shelford. The Society's formal response channels would have taken two weeks; Marcus needed someone he trusted before that.

Coming Into Wrong File

Chuck's first stop is the waystation. Rhennick briefs him on the Corella situation. Chuck's read: a Threat Designation against a Senior Mediator is either a mistake or a provocation, and the Shelford Field Office's recent classification pattern suggests it isn't a mistake. He goes to find Corella. In doing so, he walks into what Austin and Shaun are already working and into the case Autie has been building.

Meeting Kevin is a side consequence. Chuck recognizes him as Skinchanger in the way Faeborn practitioners can read lineage presence without a formal assessment. The recognition is mutual. No prior relationship, but Chuck has clear professional opinions about what a Vanguard posting means for a Skinchanger, and he keeps them quiet until there's a reason to share them.
