The players created characters at the first session in about 5 minutes. No serious background development or previous histories between characters. What you find here is the GM retconning characters into aspects of the setting to assure some common threads between characters and the events.

How They Ended Up in Shelford

Five people, five different reasons, the same two-week window.

Austin and Shaun have been working the Illinois/Indiana corridor for four months, following a pattern that won't resolve into any known threat category. Sixteen field notes, three anomalous threshold site visits, a working theory that something upstream is responsible for all of it. Esther Pellman's archive is the next logical check.

Autie is three weeks into his first field assignment. The Shelford BUA Field Office has been filing atmospheric anomaly classifications on what his supervisor's pattern analysis suggests are threshold events being systematically mislabeled. He came to find out whether that's clerical error or something deliberate. He was assigned a supplemental support resource: a Vanguard operator on suspension named Kevin, local knowledge, deployment record redacted.

Chuck got a call from his cousin Marcus two weeks ago. Marcus is a Mediator-in-training at the Shelford Waystation. The senior Mediator he works under, Corella Vane, has been served with a BUA Threat Designation. Chuck got in his car. He knows Corella by reputation. A BUA filing against a Threshold Society Mediator is not one person's problem.

Kevin has been in Shelford for ten days. He arrived before Autie, got a hotel on the south side, and spent the first three days driving. The river. The crossing where he used to fish with his grandfather. Streets he walked to school. He drove north to Ransom Falls once, sat in the Osk Landscape Supply parking lot for twenty minutes, and came back without getting out of the car. He knows what he was sent here for. That and what he's actually doing here are not the same thing.
